FIATA Bill of Lading data extraction

An image speaks more than a thousand words. Below is an example of the three steps our OCR engine takes to automatically extract FBLs from documents.

Uploading FBL to the API

The first step is to provide an image or a PDF file of a FIATA Bill of Lading to our API. This is usually done from a mobile app or web app. The document can be sent cropped or not (with background). If the scan is sent without cropping, the Klippa API will automatically crop the document. The Klippa FBL Scanning SDK can also be used in mobile apps.

Image to text using OCR

As soon as a picture or PDF has been received, each page is converted to a TXT file. In this step all the text from the document is extracted, but it is not yet structured.

Getting JSON output from the API

The Klippa Parser takes the TXT gained from the OCR in step 2 and converts it into structured JSON using machine learning. The JSON is then returned as output from the API. From here the FBL can easily be processed into your database.

What is a FIATA Bill of Lading?

A FIATA Bill of Lading (FBL) is a shipping contract issued by the “Fédération Internationale des Associations de Transitaires et Assimilés” (International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations).

It serves as proof that goods have been carried with the use of more than one mode of transportation. It also determines the responsibilities of the freight forwarder.

FBLs may be printed and issued only by associations or members authorized by FIATA, which ensures the security of the bill of lading. As such, the FBL is recognized as a document of tradition and trust.

Did you know that apart from FBLs, Klippa OCR can scan other types of logistic documents, such as bills of lading, certificates of inspection, certificates of origin, and many more? Contact us for more information.
